Jana Ma '19 Wins KDFC Sound Logo Competition
SFCM and San Francisco premiere classical radio station, KDFC, partnered to challenge students with a sound logo competition. A sound logo, the acoustic equivalent of a visual logo, is often used to reinforce brand recognition, and KDFC has committed to using the winning submission throughout the next year.
First-year student Jana Ma was named the winner with this sound logo. Ma was nervous when she met with the musicians as it was the first time anyone had played her music. She received a $1,000 prize on behalf of the Asian Pacific Islanders for Professional & Community Advancement (APCA), Northern California as well as a professional-quality microphone from SE Electronics. Ma studies scoring music for film, games, and other media in SFCM's Technology and Applied Composition (TAC) bachelor's degree program.
The competition was judged by SFCM visiting faculty member and Grammy-winner Leslie Ann Jones, Jonathan Mayer (Sony Computer Entertainment), SFCM President David Stull, Bill Lueth (KDFC) and Chris Dauary (Rupert Neve Designs).
Ma is a young producer on the rise known as JVNA on the electronic dance music scene, remixing artists like Major Lazer and Flosstradamus. Her first original track "Flowers and Stars" is grabbing attention.
