Percussionist Jacob Nissly Joins Faculty of SFCM

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — The San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) today announces the appointment of percussionist Jacob Nissly to its faculty. Currently Principal Percussionist at the San Francisco Symphony, Nissly has performed with myriad ensembles throughout his career and has taught at some of the most respected musical institutions in the US and abroad.

“We are very excited about the addition of Jacob Nissly to our percussion faculty,” says Provost and Dean Kate Sheeran. “His artistry, deep experience as an educator, and enthusiasm will be an asset to our percussion department and to SFCM as a whole.”

“I am truly excited to join the percussion faculty at SFCM," says Jacob Nissly. "I look forward to contributing to the already great foundation that has been built over the years and collaborating with students and other faculty members, many of whom are colleagues of mine from the San Francisco Symphony.”

Prior to his appointment in San Francisco, Nissly was Principal Percussionist of the Cleveland Orchestra for two seasons and Principal Percussionist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for one season. Previously, he was a member of the New World Symphony in Miami Beach for two seasons. He has performed additionally with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera, Houston Symphony, and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. He can be heard on recordings with the San Francisco Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra's Grammy Award-winning recording of John Adams' City Noir.

Nissly was an adjunct Professor of Percussion at the Eastman School of Music for three years and at the Cleveland Institute of Music for one year. He has taught classes at The Juilliard School, University of California, San Diego, University of Michigan, Florida State University, Ohio State University, Indiana University, Northwestern University, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Seoul Philharmonic, and the Verbier Music Camp.

Nissly holds a Bachelor of Music and Jazz Studies degree from Northwestern University, where he studied with Michael Burritt, James Ross, and Paul Wertico. He received his Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Greg Zuber and Dan Druckman. He began his percussion studies with Woody Smith in Iowa.
