SFCM Statement on the Death of Michael Morgan
The San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) is saddened by the news of Oakland Symphony Music Director and Conductor Michael Morgan’s death on August 20, 2021.
Maestro Morgan partnered regularly with SFCM, where he led the SFCM Orchestra in concert several times each year, taught conducting, collaborated with faculty and was a beloved coach. Most recently, Morgan chaired the selection committee for SFCM’s first annual Emerging Black Composers Project in partnership with the San Francisco Symphony.
“Michael was a great friend, a brilliant musician and one of the first to welcome my family to San Francisco,” said SFCM President David Stull. “He was a believer in the power of music to change communities for the better. He was driven by a value system based on the premise that a life well-lived is one in service of advancing good work. His loss is a profound one for us all.”
