It’s the beginning of a brand-new chapter for some, and the start of another exciting school year for all at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Last weekend new students were welcomed into the Ute and William K. Bowes, Jr. Center for Performing Arts (the Bowes Center), with a special day of activities.

With help from SFCM staff, new students were able to start moving in August 19. Move-in day included several welcoming activities with tours of the entire 12-story building, which was inaugurated in 2021, including the living areas, cafe, basement-level technology hall, 24/7 practice rooms, rehearsal rooms, keyboard lab, the KDFC Classical California radio studios and breathtaking performance halls.

Dean of Student Life Timothy Dunn and the Student Affairs team were on hand to greet students and their families. "New students can expect a great year of programming and community building. We have placed students squarely in the center of the Bowes experience. We made floor assignments based on students' year in school, and will be tailoring our programming efforts to each floor population," Dunn said.

SFCM's home base of Hayes Valley is a bustling neighborhood filled with parks, restaurants, and arts destinations. In addition to exploring their new surroundings, according to Dunn students can expect an exciting year of student life activities after taking feedback directly from students last year. "Student Affairs is committed to your success. Each day we endeavor to provide an environment that is fully inclusive, welcoming, and that allows students to reach their goals."

This year also included a "Donuts with the Deans: Parents Edition" event where parents could get to know some faculty on campus. It's just one of many ventures Dunn has planned. "We also have expanded our staff this year, which will enable us to provide more direct support for students," Dunn added.

SFCM’s Bowes Center features around-the-clock security officers and allows access only to students, faculty, staff, and guests utilizing badge access. Student Life employees plan to make the Bowes Center feel just like home for students through fun activities, student club advising, and campus programs. "We are here to support students as they navigate life off-stage and we are happy to be helpful," Dunn said.
